The Masterlist contains every fic recced here, arranged by author. If you spot any dead links or have any other admin-y type comments, please leave a comment on this post.
You can also use the tags to search for, e.g., every pre-quest fic. There is a list of tags here. You can see a list of author tags in the masterlist post. Other tags used include the following:
Time Periods
Pre-Quest: Anything set before the Shadow of the Past. Can be before or after Bilbo's party.
Quest: Set between Gandalf's final visit to Bag End and Mount Doom.
Post-Quest: Anything set between the Field of Cormallen and the Grey Havens.
Tol Eressea: From Frodo and Sam's reunion over the Sea onwards.
Fics which cross time periods will have more than one tag.
You will note that there is a period of some sixty years not covered by either the post-quest or tol eressea tags. Fics set in this time frame are tagged according to the nature of the story: i.e., a fic about Sam's time as Mayor will be tagged post-quest, whereas one about Frodo waiting for Sam will have a tol eressea tag. Sam POV fics get tagged tol eressea from the time he decides to sail, whether or not he actually gets to the Undying Lands by the end of the fic.

'Ship Type
Pre-slash: Frodo and Sam don't actually hook up, but the desire or subtext is there.
First time: Any fic about the start of Frodo and Sam's relationship, whether or not there's an actual "time" involved, so to speak.
Established: A fic which already assumes Frodo and Sam have a physical relationship.
Themes
Angst: Used for especially angsty fics. Can include character death, which I don't warn for separately, so proceed with caution.
Grey Havens: A fic that is about, or includes, Frodo's departure. They tend to be angsty, so view this as a warning!
Humour: Not necessarily parody, this can also refer to a humorous premise seriously executed.
Master/Servant: A fic that focuses on the master/servant relationship, or handles it in a particularly interesting way. This can be anything from Frodo's requesting "special services" to Sam's angsting about his "proper place."
Other attributes
Alternate Universe (AU): This can mean anything from a deviation from canon, e.g. omitting Rosie, to an all out Hobbits-in-space fic (and if the latter has actually been written, pls to be sending me a link?).
Movieverse: Indicates that the fic is based on movie canon.
PWP: 'Plot? What Plot?' or 'Porn Without Plot.'
WIP: Work in Progress, often (but not always) permanently abandoned, but I don't list them here unless they're well worth reading even in their unfinished state. (Note: if you come across something marked WIP which has since been completed, I would be much obliged if you could drop me a line)

Length
I don't do word counts, as that would take far too long. Length is only indicated for fics which are particularly short or especially long. Everything in between is, well, fic-length.
Drabble: One hundred words, or thereabouts (not all writers define the term so strictly, and I'm not about to check up on them). Also used for series of drabbles.
Ficlet: A short fic. No particular definition here, but if I can read it in less than the time it takes me to drink a cup of tea, it gets the ficlet tag.
Long: Again, no strict definition, but don't make any plans for the evening if you want to get through them in one sitting.
